The Best Position for a Lab Is Inside the Spec, Not in the Bid

There are two ways a testing or NDT lab gets work. The first is competing per job, where a buyer sends the same RFQ to four labs and picks on price and turnaround. The second is being named or implied inside the customer's own quality requirement, so the specification points at you before anyone opens a bid.

 

The second position is worth far more, and it is the one I see labs market toward least. When a prime's supplier quality document says testing must be performed by a lab accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 with Nadcap AC7004 approval and personnel certified to NAS 410, that language did not appear by accident. Somebody wrote it. And whoever the quality manager was thinking about while writing it now sits inside the requirement instead of outside it, bidding against three others.

 

This is the strategic frame behind marketing for testing and inspection companies. The goal is not to win more quote requests. The goal is to be the reference point a quality engineer uses when defining what acceptable looks like.

 

How a Lab Earns Its Way Into the Requirement

Quality managers write specifications defensively. They are not naming a favorite vendor. They are writing language that survives an audit, satisfies a customer flowdown, and does not leave a gap somebody catches later. So they reach for whatever source gives them clean, standard-referenced language they can lift.

 

Today that source is usually the standard itself, a prime's supplier manual, or a competitor's scope document. It could be your website. That is the opportunity.

 

What makes it possible is publishing your accreditation and method coverage in the same structure a spec writer needs it. Not a logo bar. Actual scope. Which methods, to which standards, at which acceptance criteria, by personnel certified under which written practice. I look at a lot of NDT company websites, and the pattern is a services page listing PT, MT, UT, RT, and ET as five words with no standards attached to any of them. A quality engineer cannot write a requirement from that page. So they write it from somewhere else.

 

The same gap shows up on industrial testing laboratory websites, where mechanical, metallurgical, and chemical capabilities get listed without the ASTM designations that make them specifiable. Tensile testing is a capability. ASTM E8 tensile testing performed under a 17025 scope with the certificate number published is a specification input.

 

Accreditation visibility matters more than lab owners tend to think. An accreditation that lives only as a PDF someone has to request is not doing marketing work. The certificate number, the accrediting body, the scope document, and the expiration date belong on an indexable page. AI search tools and procurement people pull from the same shallow layer of public text. If your scope is not in it, you are not in the answer either.

 

What Buyers Verify Before They Write You In

There is a short verification sequence that happens before a lab gets named in anything. It runs roughly in this order:

  • Accreditation body and certificate number, usually A2LA, ANAB, or Perry Johnson for ISO/IEC 17025, plus Nadcap AC7004 for aerospace work
  • The actual scope of accreditation, since 17025 accredits specific methods and not the lab as a whole
  • Method list mapped to standards, meaning ASTM E1417 for liquid penetrant and ASTM E1444 for magnetic particle rather than bare method names
  • Personnel certification basis, whether the written practice follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A or NAS 410, and who holds Level III responsibility
  • ISO 9001 or AS9100 registration for the quality system behind the testing
  • Report format and data deliverables, because a report that does not carry the right traceability creates rework downstream
  • Named customer approvals already held, since an existing prime approval shortens the qualification path for the next one

 

Every item on that list is a page or a section that either exists on a lab's site or does not. When it does not exist, the buyer either calls to ask or moves on. Sometimes they call. Often they move on, because there are other labs whose scope is already published.

 

Content That Helps Quality Managers Do Their Job

The content that earns spec position is not promotional. It is useful in a narrow, technical way.

 

Write the pieces a quality manager would actually use. How to specify penetrant inspection on a machined casting. What a 17025 scope of accreditation covers and what it does not. When Nadcap approval is required versus when 17025 alone is sufficient. What belongs in an NDT requirement on a purchase order. Which acceptance criteria apply to a given weld class.

 

Content like that gets read by the exact person whose language ends up in the requirement. And it gets cited by AI search tools, because it answers a specific technical question with standard references attached. That combination is rare in this sector.

 

Moving From Bidding to Being Named

The shift is not complicated in concept. It means treating your accreditation scope, method coverage, and personnel certification structure as published, indexable content rather than credentials you produce on request. And it means writing for the quality manager who is drafting a requirement, not the buyer who is collecting three quotes.

 

Labs sometimes need outside perspective to see this, because the scope document feels like a compliance artifact internally. Externally it is the most persuasive marketing asset the lab owns.
